The CYMT Summer Holiday Course 2019 is designed to provide students aged 10 – 18 with intensive yet enjoyable training to develop their creative skills in music & drama while complimenting their regular term time activities both in and out of school. 

All students will be offered a wide variety of workshops including:

  • bands
  • orchestra
  • jazz jam sessions
  • samba band
  • singing ensemble
  • junk percussion
  • theory of music
  • song-writing & composition
  • music production
  • drama games & exercises
  • script work
  • acting monologues / short scenes
  • voice work for actors
  • character development
  • movement for actors

There will be free choice sessions each day including team games and crafts activities. The week will end with a performance and mini exhibition for families and friends, showcasing the results achieved during the course. Free admission, all welcome.

The course will be led by Centre for Young Musicians Taunton (CYMT) tutors supported by a pastoral team engaged to ensure the wellbeing of all children and young people throughout the course. 

Mrs Rachael Parvin, Head of CYMT, oversees all the pastoral care at CYMT as well as being the Designated Safeguarding Lead.  Mrs Sarah-Jane Cross is the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at CYMT.  There is a rolling programme of Child Protection Updates and training for all staff and volunteers at CYMT in line with the Safeguarding Policy of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

There may be opportunities during the week for attendees to have individual tuition if required.  This would be charged at £20.00 per 30 minute lesson, payable in advance.  Please ensure you provide details on the application form if requesting individual tuition during the Summer Holiday Course.

BANDS & ORCHESTRA Practical workshops for bands, orchestra, jazz jam sessions and samba band will be led by brass specialist Jim Bennett, guitar specialist Ed Gerlach and percussion specialist Sam Felton.  All the bands and orchestra parts will be arranged as appropriate for the level of the players attending the course.

MUSIC PRODUCTION Instrumentalists & singers interested in recording a cover version of a piece of music then arranging, sequencing, and mixing the track on a Mac computer using LogicProX will love this course led by studio expert Hayley Burgess.  Any genre of music, no previous music production experience necessary. 

DRAMA & ACTING Led by theatre director and ex-National Youth Theatre actor Sarah-Jane Cross, the drama and acting workshops will explore ensemble work using drama games, exercises, voice work, character development and movement.  There may be opportunity for some script work / audition preparation, e.g. monologues or short scenes from Shakespeare or contemporary plays.

SINGING & JUNK PERCUSSION Led by singing expert Lisa Tustian, these dynamic and exciting singing workshops will help improve all students’ vocal skills and develop repertoire across a wide variety of styles from sacred music to West End & Broadway musical theatre hits.  Lisa’s junk percussion workshops are legendary and great fun for all. 

THEORY OF MUSIC & SONG-WRITING Ideal for musicians who are preparing for ABRSM/Trinity Grades 1-5 Theory qualifications, the course covers a vision of basic music theory as well as triads and cadences, and an introduction to composing melodies and song-writing skills.  Led by violinist Claire Clancey and woodwind specialist Carolyn Tudor, applicants are encouraged to bring any theory questions causing concern. 

FREE CHOICE SESSIONS There will be free choice sessions each day including sports / team games such as football, cricket, rounders, basketball, which will be led by various tutors on the course.  The free choice sessions for crafts activities will be led by Lisa Tustian, and may include making pebble/driftwood pendants, woven bookmarks/hangings, pebble creatures, origami, manga/animal drawing, raffia bowls, bunting.

INDIVIDUAL TUITION There may be opportunities during the week for attendees to have individual tuition if required. This would be charged at £20.00 per 30 minute lesson, payable in advance. Please ensure you provide details on the application form if requesting individual tuition during the Summer Holiday Course.

Individual tuition will be available in the following: acting / speech & drama, music production, theory of music, all orchestral instruments [flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, violin, viola, trumpet, trombone, orchestral percussion], singing, guitar, bass guitar, & drum kit.  Individual tuition may take place during a timetabled workshop but there will be no reduction of course fees for the part workshop missed.

CYMT Summer Holiday Course 2019 will take place at Richard Huish College, South Road, Taunton TA1 3DZ from Monday 12 August to Friday 16 August 2019. 
Workshops will start at 9.45am and finish at 4.00pm daily. Drop-off between 9am-9.45am and collect by 4.30pm daily.
Refreshments (squash & biscuits) will be provided during the morning and afternoon breaks. Students will be supervised during all breaks. 
Students should bring a packed lunch. Secondary aged students will only be allowed off site during lunchtime with written permission from parents/carers.

9.45 – 10.30 session 1, 45′

10.30 – 11.15 session 2, 45′

11.15 – 11.35 break 1, 20′

11.35 – 12.20 session 3, 45′

12.20 – 1.05 session 4, 45′

1.05 – 1.45 break 2 (lunch), 40′

1.45 – 2.45 session 5, 60′

2.45 – 3.00 break 3, 15′

3.00 – 4.00 session 6, 60′

Please note session 6 at 3.00pm on the final day, Friday 16 August, will be the performance showcase for families and friends. Free admission, all welcome.

Centre for Young Musicians Taunton (CYMT) provides high quality sustainable musical training for young people on Saturdays in term time.  Based at Richard Huish College in Taunton, the Centre is open to all children aged 5 – 18 learning to sing or play an instrument as well as beginners.

Every student has an exciting, personalised timetable to improve music skills, knowledge and confidence alongside other like-minded musicians.  No audition is required and students can join at any point in the academic year and continue instrumental lessons with their current teacher.
With groups for singing, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, strings, guitars, orchestra, and bands there is something for everyone.  CYMT is a fantastic resource offering lots of performance opportunities and a wide variety of workshops including history of music, theory, aural, general musicianship and creative music production.
